Preacher As Truth-Teller with

Nadia Bolz-Weber

What does it mean to speak truth in love? How can preachers address hard realities while holding space for grace and healing? This gathering examines the courage, integrity, and vulnerability required to proclaim truth in a world that often resists it. Nadia Bolz-Weber, founding pastor of House for All Sinners and Saints and author of Pastrix: The Cranky, Beautiful Faith of a Sinner & Saint, is known for her raw honesty and commitment to those on the margins. She will challenge preachers to engage hard truths with authenticity, compassion, and a willingness to embrace the tension between grace and accountability.

Preacher As Author

Rev. Dr. Donyelle McCray

Do you have a book in you? A preacher’s words do not fade when the sermon ends, they can take on another life through the written page. Yale Divinity School Homiletics Professor Rev. Dr. Donyelle McCray, scholar, preacher, and author, explores how writing extends the preacher’s voice beyond the pulpit. Her book, Is It A Sermon, examines the boundaries of preaching, questioning how the spoken word translates into written form and what truly constitutes a sermon. This session considers how the act of writing refines the preacher’s message, allowing her to engage with theology, storytelling, and spiritual formation in ways that reach beyond the moment of proclamation.

Preacher as Worshiper

Grammy Winning Artist Courtney Harrell

What about the minister whose pulpit is the marketplace? Before she preaches, she surrenders her own heart. Preaching is more than delivering a message, it is an act of worship that first transforms the messenger before reaching others. Grammy Award-winning artist and songwriter Courtney Harrell knows this sacred rhythm intimately. Having written for icons like Beyoncé, Ariana Grande, and Mary J. Blige, her music carries a depth that goes beyond melody, it’s ministry. From raising her son as a young mother to rediscovering her voice on The Voice after 15 years, her journey is one of resilience, faith, and purpose. This session explores how worship shapes the inner life of a preacher, artist, or servant leader, aligning the heart with God so that ministry, like music, flows authentically. Whether through song, sermon, or service, we are called to embody what we proclaim, becoming worshipers before we ever become voices.

Preacher As Justice-Seeker with

Rector Rev. Gini Gerbasi

The call to preach is a call to seek justice. How can preachers speak with both prophetic boldness and pastoral care? What does it mean to stand with the oppressed while offering a vision of hope? Rector Gini Gerbasi, known for her justice work near the White House during the 2020 protests, shares from her experiences as a leader who has confronted systemic injustice while pastoring a community. She will offer insights on proclaiming truth in the public square, holding institutions accountable, and embodying the gospel’s call for righteousness and equity.

Preacher As Storyteller with

Rev. Dr. Bertice Berry

Stories shape faith and build connections. What makes a story stay with us? How do stories help us understand ourselves and others? This moment explores the power of storytelling in preaching, offering techniques for crafting sermons that captivate and transform. Dr. Bertice Berry, a sociologist, best-selling author, and master storyteller, believes that the way we tell our story shapes how we live our lives. She will guide preachers in using narrative as a tool for inspiration, reflection, and meaningful engagement with their communities.

Preacher As Artist with

Associate Rector Samantha McKean

Preaching is more than words; it is an act of creative expression. How can preachers use rhythm, imagery, and the senses to communicate the gospel? This session invites preachers to see their work as an art form, shaping sermons that engage both the mind and the heart. Rev. Samantha McKean brings her experience in weaving artistic elements into worship, helping preachers embrace creativity as a necessary part of their calling.

Preacher As Epistle with

Rev. Dr. Claudette A. Copeland

Before she preaches, she lives the message. A preacher is more than just a preacher, she is a living epistle representing  the gospel of Jesus Christ, shaped by the depths of her interior life. Rev. Dr. Claudette A. Copeland, a preaching giant, is a world-renowned preacher who has graced platforms like Woman Thou Art Loosed, Joint College of Bishops, The Hampton University Ministers’ Conference and so many more. She emphasizes that true preaching flows from a soul rooted and formed in God’s presence. She will share with us how the preacher’s interior life, her spiritual depth, integrity, and communion with God, becomes the first sermon she preaches. Before we proclaim truth, we must embody it, allowing our lives to be a visible testament to the transformative power of God.

Remembering

Minister and Soul Singer Angie Stone

Ms. Angie Stone had planned to be with us, but on March 1, 2025, she transitioned to be with the Lord. Though she is no longer with us in body, she remains an honorary member of our community, her spirit is has been woven into our work. A gifted artist with historical roots in the church, Angie was pursuing ministry, embodying the sacred rhythm of worship in both her music and her life. We will honor her memory and legacy, celebrating the light she brought to the world and the message she carried, one that continues to inspire us to be worshipers before we ever are public messengers.
